Diablo 3 – Where A hero’s greatest Foe are Doors

Since Diablo 3 : Ultimate Evil Edition came out in August, I started a new character and have been playing through the story line again. It has been a while since I’ve played through the first 4 Acts of the game, and replaying through it this time, has made me realize how incompetent the Nephalem is at opening doors. I’m mean here she is, the fruit of both Angels and Demons, with skills and powers immeasurable who can take on hordes of enemies at once, defeat elites, Evil Lords of Hell and even Diablo 3 at the end of the game, and yet whenever she is faced with a door, there is an NPC offering to open the door for you.

The first time playing through the game, I was probably taken by the game play, the skills, the class mechanics, and the story in general that I probably didn’t pay much attention to this tiny detail, but this time around I noticed that right since Act 2, almost everyone comes by and says “Let me get this door for you”. In Act 2 itself there are so many instances where our heroes will be stumped while facing a giant door and will need NPC intervention to get past.

The first time we meet with Emperor Hakkan in the sewers, he introduces himself, and then kindly offers to open the gate to the sewers for you. The first time I played the game, I liked the little Emperor at this point in the game, since it is quite unexpected from someone of such a high standing to come along and open a measly door for you.

A  short while later in the Act, we have Zoltun Kulle traveling with us, and he offers to open the the entrance to the waterway. Not to mention he also gives an epic maniacal laughter after he says “I’ll open this door for you”, and when you enter, its just an empty room. Sigh! I had expected something more evil to ambush me as I entered the waterway, after that laugh of his. It was quite a disappointment.

Finally towards the end of the Act, Adria and Leah come rushing to aid us in combating Belial and storming the doors of the castle. But when they said storming the doors of the castle, I didn’t think they meant it literally. Adria encourages Leah to open two doors for us on the way to fight Belial, with her unique magical powers, which have not been explained in the game very well. However, once the final door is down it is up to the hero again to face Belial and save Caldeum from being destroyed, while Adria went to help Leah recuperate from her door opening fatigue. The same hero who was powerless against the might of these doors, has suddenly become the fearsome and capable Nephalem to bring down the Lord of Lies – Belial himself.

There are other times through out the game as well, when the NPC’s come along and give  you a helping hand in opening doors. This poses a really big question, why the one person up on whose shoulders the fate of all humanity rests, is unable to open doors. If the doors were magical in nature, there should have been a better explanation in the game as to their difficulty, or may be another quest which allowed the Nephalem to be able to disarm the wards on the doors and get past. 

Even though the story was still quite lacking in the expansion Reaper of Souls, Blizzard did improve upon the story telling quite a bit and at least it wasn’t rife with powerful doors that our heroes were unable to open.

Currently playing : August edition

Diablo 3 : Ultimate Evil Edition, the version for consoles, was scheduled to be out this week, so I was mostly trying to finish games currently in progress. I also started Witcher 2, this month, on a free weekend, and hope that I don’t shelve it again this time around. Otherwise that will be my 4th play through Act 1 again :).

Dishonored:

I started playing the game in July and finally finished it in the first week of August. As mentioned in my previous post, the game left a lot to be desired as far as story was concerned. But the gameplay was fantastic. The multiple approaches to each mission, and the morality of the choice to kill enemies or leave them unharmed was the highlight of the whole game. The game measures the amount of chaos your actions cause throughout the game, which affects the rate at which the plague spreads throughout Dunwall. The more enemies you kill, the chaos goes up, which results in more rat swarms and more plague victims, and making it harder to navigate through certain rat infested areas. The chaos level will also determine the story ending at the end of the game.

I chose to play the game on lower chaos, which meant I had to kill minimal number of enemies. I tried to maintain a zero kill and non-detected status, but the game becomes very difficult and except for a few missions, I wasn’t able to remain undetected. The game has a very few skills to choose from, and the most useful one I found was the Blink ability which allowed me to teleport across the map, horizontally or vertically. Dark vision was another ability which I found extremely useful throughout the game. Another ability which seemed very useful for high chaos characters was the shadow kill ability which would make all corpses disappear when the ability is maxed out. All in all, Dishonored was a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn’t played it yet, to pick it up on the next steam sale.

Serious Sam 3:

I had been playing Serious Sam 3, chapter by chapter for a long time now (probably started it sometime last year during one of the Steam sales). The game is quite difficult even at the easier difficulty levels in single player, but comparatively easy in co-op, since you re-spawn immediately on death, while your teammates can continue to kill monsters. Just like its predecessors, the game sends hordes of enemies of different types and skills at you from all directions in large open maps, and soon your life is in danger.  The game also equips you with a multitude of weapons, while you can use any weapon any against enemy, there are certain weapons which will be the most efficient choice to survive the horde with the amount of ammo you have. This game is very challenging in single player, but definitely a blast when played in co-op.  It’s a Serious Sam franchise, so the story is not even worth mentioning, but there are moments when you really blurt out “Really ? Are you serious?” at the ridiculous statements and actions of our hero Sam.

Witcher 2 : Assassins of Kings

I started Witcher 2 last year, after picking it up in the summer steam sale, but had stopped towards the end of Act I just before going on a long hiatus from gaming in general. I thought of resuming it again, but since a lot of time had passed and I couldn’t remember some of the choices I had made during Act I, I decided to restart it. While replaying through the game, I made a few mistakes in certain quests which caused unwanted outcomes towards the act end, and having played it the first time around last year the right way, I knew what the desired outcomes were. So I ended up restarting the game and playing through the Prologue twice before I kind of got to a likable state.

This time around, I also installed the Combat Rebalance mod, mainly due to the input lag reduction that is quite prevalent in the game, but I am now realizing it that it has removed a few armor and weapon diagrams from the early part of the game as a part of the rebalance. Oh well! I can’t really remove the mod now, since it changed the skill points assignments significantly, so I will just have to continue as is.

I love the Witcher game mainly for the tough decision choices that they put in front of you to make. I haven’t reached far into the story yet to have made any significant choices, but some of the side quests already had tough decisions to make.

Diablo 3 : Ultimate Evil Edition

I was playing Diablo very often, almost on a daily basis ever since Reaper of Souls had come out in March, and then put it away after the Greater Rifts appeared in patch 2.1 on PTR. I joined PTR just to see what the Greater Rifts were about, but the rifts mechanics was so much fun, that I started finding the regular game somewhat bland.

The console version for Diablo 3 came out this Tuesday, and I’ve been playing it in free time all week. I started a Demon Hunter this time, a class I hadn’t played on PC before, just for a change. I had played Diablo 3 on Xbox 360 before, and the process to transfer your character saves to the Xbox One version was very straightforward and took only a couple of minutes to get the account up and running. The console version seems to have some issues, which I may elaborate in a separate post, and I have had the game crash on me at least once so far.

Blizzard has added a new mechanic to the game, called Nemesis, where once you are killed by a certain monster, it has a chance to spawn later in one of your friend’s games as a Nemesis (the name of the monster would Nemesis and it would also say “Killer of <characterName>” to identify whose Nemesis is being killed). Once the Nemesis has been killed, it will drop a gift for you, which your friends can send to you via mail. The gift is usually a rare or a  legendary item, and so far I have gotten 3 legendaries and 1 rare from the gifts I have received – Yes, I’ve died quite a bunch, since Demon Hunters feel like a very squishy class, especially in torment mode, which I’m leveling in, and also targeting monsters on the console takes a little getting used to.

I suspect, I will continue to spend more time on Diablo 3 over the next few weeks. I’m always amazed at how Blizzard makes such addictive games. I got out of WoW a couple of years back, but they still keep looping me in with every new release they come out.

Finall Got A Moonlight Ward

I have been looking for a moonlight ward on my Arcane Wizard ever since D3:RoS came out. For weeks, the amulet didn’t drop and Kadala didn’t give me one either. After spending almost 5K blood shards later, I got the amulet over the weekend.

The amulet rolled without a primary stat and with stats on the lower end for both Arcane skill damage and the Legendary affix for Arcane Ward damage, however, it still is a damage upgrade compared to my previous rare amulet.

Now my wizard is decked in all BiS gear for my current spec – 4 set Tal Rasha, 4 set Vyr’s and 3 set Aughilds with Ring of Royal Grandeur and Stone of Jordan. I think it is time to try out a T6 rift this week, however, I’m sure I still need better stat rolls on the current items to do well in T6, both in terms of survivability and damage, but the run should give me idea of where I am as far as T6 capability is concerned.

Tal Rasha or Vyr’s ? Why not both ?

I have been playing Arcane wizard since Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls came out, and I finally got the final set pieces to complete my favorite 4 set bonuses during the anniversary buff. My wizard is now running both 4 set Vyr’s Set and 4 set Tal Rasha set. For those who don’t know what these are, here is one item from each set showing the 4 set bonuses:

Currently Playing – May Edition

I am usually playing more than one game in any given week, so I thought I should start writing about what I’m currently playing each month.  In May, I’m playing Diablo 3 and Bioshock 2 so far, with Diablo 3 taking most of my gaming time.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls

Since Diablo expansion came out in late March, I’ve been playing it almost every day. My main character is a wizard, currently capable of doing Torment 3 rifts solo, but can do Torment 4&5 rifts with groups. Damage wise, I am capable of doing Torment 5 but I need some more survivability to be able to do Torment 4 onwards in a single player game.

Bioshock 2

When friends are not online to play Diablo 3, or when I’m tired of the countless rifts in Diablo 3, I am playing through the campaign of Bioshock 2. This game has been on my to-play list for a very long and i bought it years ago. I think I’m half way through the campaign and the gameplay is quite fun. However, I can’t play the game for more than a couple of hours at a time, due to constant head bob and the startling ambush of enemies in the game.

Road to Whimsyshire: Diablo 3’s secret level

So, there is no cow level, but you can go to a land of ponies and bears in Diablo 3. However, unlike Diablo 2, the road to whimsyshire is not easy and is very expensive. You require five key ingredients to open the way to this whimsical land of cute creatures, namely:

  1. Leoric’s Shinbone  (Act I) : Found Inside of the fireplace in Leoric’s Manor (Click on the burnt logs)
  2. The Black Mushroom (Act I) – Found in the cathedral, most commonly floor 1 (Click on the mushroom pile
  3. Liquid Rainbow (Act II) : Inside of a mysterious cave in act 2 found in Path to Oasis
  4. Wirt’s Bell (Act  II) : Bought for 100,000 gold from Squirt the Peddler in the Act 2 in the middle of Caldeum Bazaar
  5. Gibbering Gemstone (Act III) : Drops from Chiltara in the Caves of Frost(Found after Bridge of Korsikk)
  6. Plans: Staff of Herding (Act IV) :  The recipe to craft the staff is a drop from Izual (Act 4 Boss)

Diablo 3 : Second Impressions

Finally had a chance to play Diablo 3 last night for a couple of hours. I created a wizard for the first run through the game, though from playing the Beta, I found monk, warrior and demon hunter interesting as well. I didn’t like the game play for witch doctor at least in the first 10 levels, when you only have fire bats and spider jars. The almost undying hounds are pretty neat to have, and it seems that witch doctor will be a pretty powerful character at higher levels, but something about throwing spiders at enemies just didn’t seem like fun.

Having already “played” diablo 3 in beta and multiplayer during the open beta, there are some new features that are now visible to the gamers, other than the fact that we can now actually log in 🙂 . Primarily, we now see cinematics for the story line and characters. Unlike its predecessor, Diablo 3 has unique story lines for all classes. There are  short cinematics between major plot points in the game pertaining to the characters life and the next goals related to the story arc. Another difference was that you now start with a lot of sigils and patterns to create a custom banner. Also, achievements now unlock new sigils in game.

I played with two friends who had already leveled up to level 15 and level 24, and joining scaled the game difficulty to the highest level character in the party. This does make leveling for lower level characters very slow, since you gain very little experience for killing mobs.

Last night, I replayed what was already in Beta, clearing the cathedral and defeating the Skeleton King. This weekend, I hope to make more progress in the game and hopefully finish the whole story arc in normal difficulty.
